Health and Fitness at Home. What You Need To Buy.

What you need to buy!

The idea that you have to buy fitness gear to get fit isn’t correct. Products aren’t necessary. You can have a home gym without equipment. Although if that is the case I would suggest picking up a pair Gym Rings of for your back exercises. But if, like me, you like variation and a gym near home. Here is my opinion on what everyone should have in a home gym to maximise their fitness and health.

Going to the gym is not for everyone. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, have insufficient time, travel or just the overall cost of going to a gym. Many people are choosing to go with the home gym set up. Being able to walk into your spare room or garage and you are already in your gym increases your likelihood of going. Home gyms can quickly become very expensive. So in this post I want to keep it at what I consider the best buys for a quick home gym. To start getting healthier and fitter in the “comfort” of your own home. This list if for beginners so all the fitness gear linked are mainly the cost effective approach, to test the waters of a home gym.

Table of Contents

Weight section.

Power Rack.

First up has to be the Power Rack or Squat rack.

Apart from weights and a bar, I’d say a power rack is the most important piece of gear for lifting weights. It keeps you safe and allows you to do exercises without the need of a spotter.

The main thing to look for in a power rack is how much weight it can safely hold. There is no use using one that won’t protect you. There are many options for power racks such as half racks, full racks, collapsible and many more. But for simplicity I am going with a fairly cheap but strong full power rack. It can do everything for you and keep you safe without breaking the bank.

Weight Plates and Barbells.

Once you have your power rack you need Weight Plates and Barbells.

People like to get companies weight plates because they like the design or the company and that’s fine. But when it gets down to it weight is weight so get the cheapest weight plates you can find.

A barbell on the other hand is not something you should try and find the cheapest version of. You need a bar that is well put together with a high tensile strength.

Make sure to grab yourself a pair of Barbell Collars as well for safety.

Weight Bench.

You will also want a Weight Bench.

It is a versatile tool for your home gym.  You obviously know about bench press but there are many more exercises with benches like Bulgarian split squats.

You want your Weight Bench to be stable. And hold as much weight as you want to use plus your body weight. So always err on the side of more weight capacity.

I personally like adjustable benches, they are slightly more expensive but increase the amount of exercises you can do greatly.

Dumbbells.

Dumbbells are so versatile from strength exercises to cardio.

They work more stabilization muscles meaning you can lift a lot less weight for the same results.

Personally I am still a major fan of the old school adjustable dumbbells everyone had as a kid. I don’t feel like need to spend thousands of dollars on a nice dumbbell set and the rack for them to sit on. While one adjustable dumbbell can do the same job.

Cardio Section.

Skipping Rope.

Skipping Rope is my favourite tool for your fitness and health.

It is cheap, easy, quick and burns a tonne of calories.

There is not much to say beside get one and get skipping!

Battle Rope.

The Battle Rope

The most loved and hated fitness device I think I have ever seen.

It is excellent as a cardio tool and being one of the few tools to build upper body endurance is a great tool in your cardio arsenal

As far as what to look for it is simple, cheap is fine they are all roughly the same price. It is a tool that is going to be beaten and battered so branding is not the most important thing.

Rower.

The last cardio equipment I think is amazing is the Indoor Rower.

The Indoor Rower is in my opinion the best cardio machine as it is truly a full body workout in and of itself. It is extremely tough workout and burns a lot of calories while having the ability to build some muscle

The Indoor Rower that I have linked is a very specific one. It is in my opinion the best rower you can have and as a piece of equipment that has a lot of moving parts you want one that is well made and will last you years and the concept 2 rower will last you a long time.

Extra conditioning.

Medicine Ball.

The Medicine Ball

It’s a heavy ball, that’s pretty much it. you throw it and bounce it and act like a kid all while building up muscular endurance and getting a really good workout that will boost your fitness and health.

I personally like the wall Medicine Ball they don’t bounce when you throw them so less likely to smack you in the face when you do slams, also just like the name sounds it’s good for throwing into a wall.

Kettlebell.

Ahh the Kettlebells, everyone’s worst enemy.

The Kettlebells is a ruthless fitness tool that will get you extremely fit with its versatile uses. It is low impact on the body, gets the heart rate pumping and with heavier weight is also good for building muscle.

Again things like these it doesn’t matter the brand, the weight is the weight and your body won’t know if you are going cheap.

They are quit pricey, so if you aren’t able to fork out the money for a few of them or an adjustable one I say build one.

You can simple follow this tutorial to build a cheap DIY adjustable kettlebell and start dipping your toes into the torture that is kettlebell swings.

Gymnastic Rings.

The under used Gymnastic rings are amazing.

they are the ultimate tool for bodyweight training. people think of these are a tool just for gymnasts but everyone should have a pair, or 4 in my case. They are compact and portable, durable and allow a vast amount of exercises from pushing variations like archer push ups to the simple and time tested pull up and even muscle ups.

I have tried a few rings in my time and I have found that the only thing to avoid is the plastic ones. Most wood will be okay although I would advise going against the cheapest option as splintering can be a problem.

EXTRAS.

Prehab tools.

fitness and health is more than just exercise. fitness and health is how your body holds up to those stressors.

Foam Roller.

The Foam roller is a revolutionary invention.

The ability to roll out tight areas especially on the posterior side of your body without the aid of a masseuse is frankly amazing.

The Foam roller has fixed a few of my injuries and prevented even more.

I personally prefer rigid bumpy  Foam rollers over the very soft cheap kind as they have never aided in releasing tension.

It seems like a no brainer that everyone should have a Foam roller especially if you suffer from pains and aches from tight muscles.

Foam roller

Lacrosse ball.

And up lucky last the Lacrosse…

ball

The Lacrosse ball serves the same function as the Foam roller but at a much more pin point precise way.

I have found the best results with pre and rehabbing niggles and injuries with Foam rolling and then once the muscle is warmed up digging into the sore area with a Lacrosse ball.

They are cheap, dense, portable and extremley useful. I didn’t realise how tight my body was until I touched my calve muscle with one.
